Year-end update

Latest Update: December 2022

A proposal for a trial dog beach went before the city council on November 2nd resulting in a "non vote". Basically the council heard from the public (thank you to those that came to show your support) but decided to not vote on the initiative. A big thank you to our ex-council members Kori Jensen and Christopher Rodriquez for their support and putting the item on the agenda.

While a disappointment, it wasn't a NO. We're not rolling over. Earlier in the year the council supported looking into a feasibility study and we will continue to push for that. We're weighing options and working on building relationships with city management, coastal officials and other organizations that want to improve Oceanside recreation such as the Save Oceanside Sand team.

What we achieved with your help in 2022:

  • Oceanside Dog Beach Inc. nonprofit is formed

  • The community put pressure on the city council to evaluate a dog beach

  • Agenda Item - Dec 2021 - City council voted/approved a preliminary feasibility study

  • The Developmental Services Department, Engineering Division conducted the preliminary study and presented it to the city council. Estimated cost for official study is $150,000. Suggests leveraging learnings from other dog beaches Read More

  • Oceanside Dog Beach rallies support, building awareness at all local events and venues, listening to the community. Signatures grow from 2K to 8K in 2022

  • We gained support from thousands of community members, many organizations and local businesses, from the San Diego Humane Society endorsement to the building of relationships with other successful dog beach organizations around San Diego and Orange County

  • Agenda Item - Nov 2022 - proposed pilot feasibility study, Councilmembers Kori Jensen and Chris Rodriquez craft the agenda item but council decided not to vote on it because there wasn’t enough support from council members Sanchez, Weiss and Keim.

  • Oceanside Dog Beach continues to evaluates options and suggestions for alternate locations outside of Harbor Beach while exploring local ordinances and plotting our next course of action for 2023

Thank you all!
