2024 Oceanside City Council Elections - Candidate Position on Beach Access for our Pets

Candidates,
The community is seeking your position on aligning Oceanside with the pet-friendly beach policies already in place throughout most of San Diego City, County, and California. This move reflects the desires of many residents and businesses in Oceanside and beyond.

"Pet friendly and dog beaches seem to refer to the same thing. Unfortunately, the City of Oceanside is the most challenged beach with respect to sand, plus we are under the jurisdiction of the Clean Water Act. Our city is not in a position to allow dogs on what little is left of our sand. I am willing to review after our situation changes. Thank you!"

"As I stated on the KOCT panel early in the campaign I was the only candidate to actually advocate for dog access to the beach. I believe that we need to make safe access for pet owners to bring their pets to the beach and allow them their pets to enjoy the nature that we get to enjoy. This includes making sure the sand is clear of any items that could harm the pets and create a safe environment for everyone involved. I believe we need to work directly with the city in order to create this environment and would start working on this day one."

"I will support dog friendly beach areas for our dogs. I believe the North Jetty area would be a fitting candidate for a Dog Beach, with limitations, like mornings from 5 am to 9 am, evenings from 4pm to 7 pm., and dogs on or off leashes. Seasons would dictate the times and changes as well. Also, I would like to see more friendly doggie rule signage up and down The Strand (“pick-up your poop”), more poopy bag stations, and trash cans. All ideas are welcomed.

This is a simple issue and would enhance community participation and create more revenue from tourism as well.

Yes, I will support dog friendly beaches."

"Thanks for the opportunity to respond to this question. I realize this is an important issue for many residents in Oceanside. It’s important to listen to all constituents and support policies that all of Oceanside benefits from along with the greater goal of keeping our beaches a welcoming place for everyone who wishes to visit and enjoy. I would love to work with a coalition of shareholders to ensure a common sense approach to allowing pet-friendly access to our beaches.

    Thanks"
